Two Inspiring Stories of Survival from Haiti's Earthquake-devastated Capital

"Mom, it was a miracle, God performed a miracle."

President Obama, on Thursday, spoke to the people of Haiti during a press conference, telling them they "would not be forsaken" or forgotten.

As reports filter in about the devastation in Haiti, I find it interesting to note how many NGO workers, Christian groups and missionaries were already down there, working among the Haitian people prior to Tuesday's enormous quake. A large number of them come from America.

The following are survival stories from a couple of those who were already in Haiti helping the people there until the massive tremor struck. Their rescues highlight the desperation of the situation there up to this point.

This is amazing. The love that God has for His people in times such as these when everything around us crumbles and others are not so fortunate, we see God's gracious hand at work in the stories of those who've made it through tons of material from fallen structures.

Continue to pray for Haiti and the people there.

Relief and Rescue Efforts Begin as Extent of Devastation in Haiti Starts to be Realized Following Tuesday's Horrendous Earthquake

"We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance. And our prayers are with the people who have suffered; their families, and their loved ones." -US Secretary of State Clinton

Earthquake in HaitiUPDATE—11:58AM PT—1/13/10: According to a report by the Associated Press (AP), the Red Cross estimated that "a third of Haiti's 9 million people may need emergency aid."

The report noted that "the prominent died along with the poor: the body of Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot, 63, was found in the ruins of his office, said the Rev. Pierre Le Beller of the Saint Jacques Missionary Center in Landivisiau, France. He told The Associated Press by telephone that fellow missionaries in Haiti had told him they found Miot's body. Preval told The Herald that Haiti's Senate president was among those trapped alive inside the Parliament building. Much of the National Palace pancaked on itself."

The Haitian President said he believed "thousands" are dead as a result of Tuesday's fearsome quake.

Haitans in America awaiting word from loved ones (OneNewsNow.com)

MIAMI- Alourrde Pierre stood inside a Little Haiti community center, wringing her hands as she waited for news of her parents and 15 siblings in Port-au-Prince. Her children ask what happened to their grandmother, but she has no answer.

"It is so hard not knowing," said 37-year-old Pierre. "What can we do?"

It is a scene replaying countless times among the roughly 800,000 people in the U.S. of Haitian descent, desperate for any morsel of information about loved ones on the earthquake-devastated nation. Feverish calls, texts and e-mails largely go unanswered as the distraught try to muster a reason to hope as bodies pile up on Haiti's streets.

It is truly terrifying to know what these people are going through right now. Some reports confirm that there could be anywhere between 70,000 - 100,000 by conservatives estimates, but possibly a 500,000 people who've perished after this devastating 7.2 earthquake that has hit the country of Haiti. With this comes the possibility of disease spreading throughout the area from all the dead and decaying bodies that are being pulled from the rubble and placed in the streets.

I believe God is still in the business of answering prayer, and as such, we need to keep the families of the victims of this quake in our prayers, that they may be consoled in this time of great sorrow.

God bless you, and thank you for reading today!
