Two Inspiring Stories of Survival from Haiti's Earthquake-devastated Capital

"Mom, it was a miracle, God performed a miracle."

President Obama, on Thursday, spoke to the people of Haiti during a press conference, telling them they "would not be forsaken" or forgotten.

As reports filter in about the devastation in Haiti, I find it interesting to note how many NGO workers, Christian groups and missionaries were already down there, working among the Haitian people prior to Tuesday's enormous quake. A large number of them come from America.

The following are survival stories from a couple of those who were already in Haiti helping the people there until the massive tremor struck. Their rescues highlight the desperation of the situation there up to this point.

This is amazing. The love that God has for His people in times such as these when everything around us crumbles and others are not so fortunate, we see God's gracious hand at work in the stories of those who've made it through tons of material from fallen structures.

Wise Saying Worth Heeding Part VIII

I chose today's wise saying as it applies to some of what I've been going through lately, and for the reason that it has helped me to come to terms with, and overcome some of what I've been going through...it comes from the book of James:

Starting with James 1:5-7

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting. for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways."

And continuing in...

verses 12-18

"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures."

Gardening With Bluebirds

Much to my surprise, the weather has turned out pretty good for gardening this summer, we've only had a couple weeks of dry weather, but other than that, it has rained in fairly good amounts so that stuff gets a plentiful supply of water. To the left is my sweet corn, "early sunglow" is the type of corn it is supposed to be, not very tall, and not very big ears...so, you can shuck one and plunk it in a small kettle of boiling water as part of your lunch. You can boil an ear-of-corn in as little as five minutes, rub on a little butter, and it is some of the tastiest gardening there is.



These are the tomato plants I staked and tied in order to support the new tomatoes, and likewise keep them off the ground away from the dampness and diseases. They are doing pretty good, as you can see, with several clusters of tiny green tomatoes attached to each vine. Another three weeks and some of these should be getting ripe to eat. I like them either in a salad with lettuce, cucumber, and shredded cheese with Italian dressing added, or just plain sliced with a little salt sprinkled on them. They are good.




This thing here really surprised me; my neighbor gave me some pumpkin seeds, I planted them, and once they came up, they really took off. I don't know if I will get many pumpkins from them, but they are really growing at a good clip, which is primarily what I like about the garden the most - watching things grow.


These are yellow, straight-neck squash...and they sure produce lots of squash. I eat them almost every day, fried with onions, and give some to others as well. Pretty fruits. If you will notice, the two in this photo are growing together (mutating) into one.












These are the eggs in the second brood of bluebirds this year that have nested in this box that I made for them, and placed next to the garden. With harvest time and autumn fast approaching, I do believe this will be the last brood that they'll raise this year. I hope to get a picture of the pretty blue male bluebird someday.

Update

As of Monday July 20, 2009, two of the little bluebird eggs have hatched. Not real sure if the other two will hatch or not, they may have been chilled, or were infertile. In about 14 - 22 days, they will leave the nest. They will have spotted plumage as juvenile birds and then molt into their adult plumage in the fall to early winter.

Atheism and Self-Help, Is It Possible?

I recently visited an individual’s wordpress web page titled “realistic recovery” that consists of dealing with addiction and the various problems relating to life-choices, and how best to recover from said addictions. Well, the only problem I could find with this individual’s vision in going about the process of seeking self-help for the many problems that many people face, is his advocating that those with addiction is to turn to within. I knew at that point, that there was the missing link, an entirely foundation-less message intended to supposedly “help” people to better their lives through the eyes of an atheist. I offered my advice from a different perspective, one that the author of “realistic recovery” found only the need to discourage and sharply reject through making fun of, and that I could only characterize as hate because it cuts to the quick, those who don’t want to abandon and turn away from the desires of the flesh. Here is the quote from Scripture that I shared with him…

Proverbs 3:5-8 (ESV)

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. IN all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”

If you are seeking help, I strongly recommend that you steer clear of, or get rid of any notion that there is help within yourself. Sinful egoism has led many to the loss of their souls. Turn to Jesus, as He is the first step toward renewing one’s strength. Apart from Him as John 15:5 says, we “can do nothing.” If you turn to Jesus, He will send a helper, His Holy Spirit.

Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, O' sinner, come home!
